Project Description

Project Description

This was a 13-day full log home restoration project located in the scenic town of Loveland, Colorado. The home, constructed entirely of exposed wood logs, was beginning to show the wear of time and weather. The stain was fading. The caulking and chinking had begun to fail. And the protective coatings were no longer holding up to Colorado’s sun, snow, and high-altitude moisture.

The homeowners had just purchased the property and knew the restoration had to be done right—from the inside out. At approximately 3,500 square feet, this log home required careful craftsmanship and multi-step treatments to bring it back to life. The total cost of the project ranged between $35,000 and $40,000, depending on the scope of surface repair and reapplication.

What made this job unique wasn’t just the amount of wood, but the level of detail and product layering required to ensure both longevity and a rich, beautiful finish. Elements Painting Inc. was proud to be trusted with such a significant transformation.

Background Story

The client, a recent buyer of the home, reached out to Elements Painting Inc. with two goals: to protect the investment and revitalize the home’s natural beauty. He wasn’t just looking for a fresh coat of stain—he wanted the kind of thorough, technical craftsmanship that would extend the life of the home for many more seasons.

What set him at ease was our approach. We didn’t rush to quote and coat. Instead, we took the time to explain each step, from media blasting to brushing to sealing, so he knew exactly what his house needed and why. After walking the property and discussing the condition of the logs and joinery, he was confident in our process and materials.

And once we finished? He was so pleased, he left us a thank-you gift of elk meat and steaks—a first for our crew!

Scope of Services

  • Media Blasting:
Removed the old, deteriorated stain using finely ground glass as the medium. This process opened the wood grain for better adhesion and ensured full removal of previous coatings.
  • Osborn Brushing:
Smoothed the logs following media blasting using specialty Osborn brushes to eliminate surface roughness and prep for sanding.
  • Sanding:
Lightly sanded all wood surfaces to remove remaining texture from blasting and brushing. Created an ideal finish for treatment application.
  • Caulking & Chinking Removal:
Removed all failed or aged caulking and chinking between logs, joints, and gaps to prepare for new product installation.
  • Wood Treatment Application (Colorfast):
Sprayed and back-brushed Colorfast wood treatment to neutralize the wood tone, protect the fibers, and improve stain consistency.
  • Stain Application – Coat One (Capture):
Applied the first coat of Capture stain (Chestnut color) using spray and back-brush technique. Ensured deep saturation and uniform coverage.
  • Chinking and Caulking (Log Jam & Conceal):
Installed Log Jam chinking and Conceal caulk at all joints and seams to block moisture and insect intrusion. Chosen to match stain color and blend into the finish.
  • Stain Application – Coat Two (Capture):
Applied a second coat of Capture using the same spray and back-brush method for added durability and depth of color.
  • Topcoat Sealing (Cascade):
Sprayed and back-brushed a final protective layer of Cascade clear coat to lock in the stain, repel water, and shield the wood from UV exposure.

Products Used

  • Colorfast Wood Treatment:
Applied to all exposed wood prior to staining to create color consistency and seal the fibers.
  • Sashco Capture Transparent Stain (Chestnut):
Two coats applied to all exterior log walls for rich, warm tone and weather protection.
  • Sashco Cascade Clear Topcoat:
Final layer applied across all stained surfaces for long-term UV and water resistance.
  • Sashco Log Jam Chinking:
Used to fill wider gaps and log joints, blending with the stain for a seamless look.
  • Sashco Conceal Caulk:
Installed in narrow cracks and seams for flexible, durable sealing against bugs and water.

Results

The final result was stunning. The natural beauty of the wood grain was fully restored, now enhanced by the chestnut stain and protected by a professional-grade clear topcoat. The home didn’t just look beautiful—it was now armed against the elements with long-lasting protection.

What made this job especially rewarding was the client’s enthusiasm throughout the process. He appreciated the craftsmanship, respected the timeline, and trusted our knowledge every step of the way.

“You guys really knew what you were doing. I feel great knowing the house is protected and looks incredible. Thanks for everything.”

This kind of work doesn’t just change how a house looks. It extends the life of the home and gives the owner peace of mind. And at Elements Painting Inc., we’re honored to be the team homeowners turn to when they want the job done right.
